Gary Oldman gave an emotional speech as he received his first SAG award on Sunday night.

The 59-year-old British actor won the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role award for his portrayal of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Accepting the award in Los Angeles, Oldman said he was honoured to receive the trophy – which places him one step closer to the Oscars.

Visibly teary-eyed on stage, he said: ‘I am honestly and truly thrilled and overjoyed to be in this room tonight,”

‘I’m so deeply, deeply honoured and proud to receive this magnificent award, god bless you all.’

Oldman has already had Golden Globes and Critics Choice victories so far this year, a sure fire sign that he is on the road to the Academy Awards.

But backstage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy actor played down his string of awards triumphs.

In a backstage press conference, the actor was asked how his standing in Hollywood has been changed by his recent success.

He replied: ‘You have your moment in the sun, there’s no guarantee that you’re going to keep working.

‘God forbid, I could get sick, I could get hit by a car.

‘We have today but there’s no guarantee we’re going to get tomorrow. So my feeling is: enjoy the moment in the sun, it will eclipse, it always does, and it will be someone else standing up here next year. I’m enjoying it.’
