A teenage girl will spend 40 years in a mental hospital after stabbing a classmate to please a fictional horror character called Slender Man.
Morgan Geyser, 15, has been sentenced to the maximum term in a mental health facility after a judge ruled she still poses a risk to herself and others.
At her sentencing, Geyser broke down in tears and said: "I just want to let Bella [the victim's nickname] and her family know that I'm sorry."
Geyser and Anissa Weier lured their classmate Payton Leutner into a park in Milwaukee and stabbed her 19 times.
All three girls were 12 at the time. Payton survived the attack, crawling out of the park and getting help from a cyclist.
Passing sentence, Judge Michael Bohran said: "What we can't forget is that this was attempted murder."
Geyser had pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted intentional homocide in October last year to avoid jail.
Experts had given different assessments of Geyser's current mental health, with one suggesting she should still be treated in a mental health facility, while others suggested she was not exhibiting psychotic symptoms anymore.
One doctor said Geyser had been hearing voices from a person called Maggie as recently as September.
Two doctors suggested she could move to a less restrictive facility with more patients her own age.

Weier was sentenced to 25 years in a mental health hospital in December last year.
She had pleaded guilty to being a party to attempted second-degree intentional homocide, but claimed she wasn't responsible because she is mentally ill.
