This Morning came a bit of a cropper as they paid tribute to Professor Stephen Hawking – thanks to an ill-placed burst of Meghan Trainor’s chart-topper All About That Bass.

Wednesday’s show ended with Phillip and Holly understandably paying their respects to the physicist, who sadly died in the early hours of the morning aged 76.

But after the pair had introduced the show’s tribute, with Holly saying: ‘Before we leave you today, we want to pay tribute to the world renowned physicist and genuine genius Stephen Hawking, who has sadly died at the age of 76.’

Phillip Schofield went on to describe him as ‘an inspiration to millions’ before footage of Professor Hawking was shown – but instead of his voice dispensing some of his amazing knowledge of the universe, a brief snippet of the Meghan Trainor hit was heard instead.

The mix-up was presumably due to the fact that the singer is due to appear on Thursday morning’s show to discuss her battles with anxiety.

But still, the viewers couldn’t quite believe what they had just heard.

Luckily, the gaffe lasted only a matter of seconds before switching to Professor Hawking’s voice over the show’s theme music.

Prof Hawking passed away peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

One of the world’s most acclaimed cosmologists, he was diagnosed with ALS, a rare form of motor neurone disease, in his 20s, eventually becoming wheelchair-bound and dependent on a computerised voice system for communication.

He also loved the NHS and hated Jeremy Hunt

Despite being given only two years to live at initial diagnosis, he went on to live more than 50 years, continuing to the world giving science lectures and writing scientific papers about the basic laws which govern the universe.

In a statement, his children Lucy, Robert and Tim said: ‘We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.

‘He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.

‘His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. ‘He once said, “It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love”. We will miss him forever.’
