Last nights Saturday Night Live, hosted by former S.N.L. writer John Mulaney, included a number of Mulaney-esque sketches, such as a reality show primarily made up of character intros, and a brunch with the waitstaff dressed in drag. But the clear standout was a sketch starring Mulaney, Pete Davidson, Chris Redd and Kenan Thompson, the latter as . . . a giant singing lobster.
In the sketch, Davidson and Redd are two normal guys out to dinner at a diner, and Davidson decides, what the hell, why not order the lobster? Redd cautions him to rethink his choice, pointing out that diner lobster is a farce: “The whole seafood section on the menu is a joke, man! The word seafood is in quotes.” Davidson holds firm, and Mulaney, as the waiter, gestures for the kitchen to bring out the lobster. Out rolls Thompson in a French Revolution-style jacket and claws, immersed a tank of bubbling water, from which he launches into a rendition of Jean Valjeans “Who Am I?” from Les Miserables.
Mulaney and Cecily Strong join in, and Kate McKinnon emerges as charming lady lobster “Clawsette,” who offers to save her father before the chef sends him to “the great tank in the sky.” The rest of the cast, decked out in French Revolution chic, launches into a crustacean-heavy version of “Do You Hear the People Sing?” Through it all, most of the case was hard pressed to keep a straight face, with Davidson cracking up during one cutaway. It was a strange and wonderful sketch in a night full of strange and wonderful sketches, and a good reminder to steer clear of diner seafood.
