Paramount Television has put in development a drama series based on the 2017 New Yorker article “Remembering the Murder You Didnt Commit.” The project hails from writer-director Hannah Fidell (The Long Dumb Road ) and Doug Belgrads 2.0 Entertainment.
The magazine article by Rachel Aviv explores the true story of how six people from a small town in Nebraska were brainwashed by local law enforcement into falsely believing that they had committed a murder together. The TV show will explore the fallibility of memory, the power of persuasion and the psychology of trauma.
2.0 Entertainments Belgrad and Sophie Cassidy are attached to executive produce the project.
Cassidy found the article and landed it in competitive situation, with Fidell set to write the adaptation and direct. 2.0 then shopped the package, making a deal with Paramount TV, which likely will bring a high-level auspice it has on its talent roster. In addition to writing a pilot script and a series bible, Fidell will direct multiple episodes, including the pilot.
Fidell recently wrote, directed and produced road-trip feature comedy The Long Dumb Road starring Jason Mantzoukas that bowed at this years Sundance Film Festival. That film was just acquired by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group, with a November day-and-date theatrical and VOD release planned.
In TV, Fidell directed two episodes of Hulus Casual. She is repped by UTA, Oasis Media and Frankfurt Kernit. Aviv is repped by UTA on behalf of Janklow & Nesbit Associates.
