UK TV Host Dale Winton, Face Of ITVs Supermarket Sweep, Dies Aged 62

UK TV and radio host Dale Winton, known for fronting popular shows including ITVs Supermarket Sweep and BBCs lottery program In It To Win It, has died aged 62. The host died at his home on Wednesday according to his agent Jan Kennedy.

Winton spent nearly a decade hosting the ITV daytime game show Supermarket Sweep between 1993 to 2001 and again when it was rebooted in 2007. Contestants on the show were tasked with running round a supermarket collecting items to win cash prizes. He beganhis career as a DJ which led to work in radio. Most recently he made a show for Viacom-owned Channel 5 called Dale Wintons Florida Fly Drive, the final episodes of which were due to air in June.

Winton is also known to have suffered from depression. He told ITVs Loose Women show in 2016, “I always thought, Get over yourself. But my mum died of it. It exists and anybody out there who has had it knows it exists. I didnt want to put one foot in front of the other but for a couple of really good friends.”

Kate Phillips, Controller of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC, told the broadcaster that Winton was “an immensely well-loved individual” and praised his “wonderfully unique and special energy” that he brought to TV programmes. “He was extremely kind, brilliantly funny and was a true gentleman,” she said.

TV personalities to pay tribute to Winton include Graham Norton, David Walliams and Piers Morgan. In a series of tweets Little Britain star Walliams, a close friend of Wintons, said he was heartbroken by the news.
