Benedict Cumberbatch admits he is critical of his own acting performances. The British actor, who plays the title role in Patrick Melrose, says his criticism of himself is ”sharper than anyone would ever suspect”. “You always approach a much-loved literary character with trepidation. Because I know Im not making the movie I have in my head as a reader of these books, let alone everyone else who comes to it with their expectations … Im not perfect casting in everyones eyes.

“And on top of that, theres my own criticism, which is probably sharper than anyone would ever suspect. Im my own worst critic, I really am. Its both a godsend and a curse,” Cumberbatch told Culture magazine. The 41-year-old actor says he finds it ”horrible” watching back his performances because he is ”brutally” honest with himself.

”Its different when youve got a producers hat on. If youre front and centre, thats really hard. Im excited about the moment when Im not in something and I can look at it with more distance, but its very peculiar. Its always horrible – the way you look, the way you do things. Its just horrible. Trust me, the internets full of hate but its nothing compared to the self-critic in your head for brutality. Ive said it all before they have,” he said.

Patrick Melrose is the on-screen adaptation of the novel by Edward St Aubyn.

Meanwhile, the Sherlock Holmes actor is also prepping up for his next big release, Avengers: Infinity War. Benedict plays Doctor Strange in the Marvel Studios superhero series. His character in the film has in his possession the Time Stone, one of the Infinity Stones that Thanos, the supervillain of the film, is after. Thats why he is one of the pivotal characters in the film.

Apart from him, the superheroes upcoming magnum opus features an ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Chadwick Boseman among others.
