EXCLUSIVE: Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman is getting together a slew of celebrity friends to star in a gameshow special for BBC One.
I hear Winkleman is hosting Family Assemble, which the producers describe as a “gameshow like no other” for the British public broadcaster. The one-off special is produced by Hungry Bear Media, the production company led by former Talkback Thames exec Dan Baldwin, which is responsible for some of the BBCs biggest entertainment hits including Michael McIntyres Big Show and All Round To Mrs Browns as well as recent ITV sport quiz Play To The Whistle, hosted by his wife Holly Willoughby.
Family Assemble features a number of super-competitive families who welcome celebrities into their homes to help them prepare for a number of challenges. It is described as “an exciting, warm, new entertainment show”.
The special, which I understand was commissioned by BBC Entertainment Commissioning Editor Jo Street, is being filmed on May 8 at BBC Television Centre in London. Although initially a one-off, the broadcaster and producers will be hoping that the show can become a full series, one that also has potential to travel around the world as a format.
It is the latest BBC entertainment hope after Deadline revealed yesterday that it was developing a UK version of Endemol Shines competition format First and Last. The British network also recently commissioned The Greatest Dancer, a Saturday night dance competition, from Simon Cowells Syco Entertainment and FremantleMedias Thames and renewed Remarkable Televisions All Together Now for a second season.
Last month, entertainment supremo Kate Phillips told an audience at Mip TV that as a public broadcaster it needed to take risks and “properly try things out”.
“I will commission from paper and from tape, and that wont stop. Nothing gets me more excited than a new idea that feels distinctive and fresh,” she added.
