Alan Balls Drama Here and Now Canceled By HBO After One Season

EXCLUSIVE: HBO is not renewing Alan Balls family drama Here and Now for a second season. The news comes 10 days after the series Season 1 finale.

“After careful consideration we have decided not to move forward with a second season of Here and Now,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We thank Alan for his dedication to innovative storytelling, and we look forward to his next endeavor.”

Here and Now, which starred Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter, stemmed from Balls close relationship with the previous HBO regimes. It was a rare miss for the Oscar and Emmy winner, creator of HBOs signature series True Blood and Six Feet Under and executive producer of Cinemaxs biggest hit Banshee. In addition to a lukewarm reception from critics, Here and Now also drew modest viewership for an HBO drama series, averaging 300,000-400,000 Live+same day viewers for the premiere telecast.

Here and Now was followed on HBOs schedule by Season 2 of Westworld, which made a strong ratings return on Sunday. Coming up on the drama side on the premium network are new seasons of True Detective, Big Little Lies and The Deuce as well as new series Succession and Sharp Objects starring Amy Adams. And of course, juggernaut Game of Thrones is slated to take a final bow next year.

Here and Now was described as a provocative and darkly comic meditation on the disparate forces polarizing present-day American culture, as experienced by the members of a progressive multi-ethnic family – a philosophy professor and his wife, their adopted children from Vietnam, Liberia and Colombia, and their sole biological child – and a contemporary Muslim family, headed by a psychiatrist who is treating one of their children.

Jerrika Hinton, Daniel Zovatto, Raymond Lee, Sosie Bacon, Andy Bean, Joe Williamson and Peter Macdissi also starred. Ball executive produced with Peter Macdissi and David Knoller.
