EXCLUSIVE: MTV has found a lot of success internationally with a slew of reality series such as Ex On The Beach and Geordie Shore and the Viacom-owned broadcaster is hoping that its latest suntanned effort – The Lovers & The Liars can achieve similar notoriety.

The broadcaster has ordered the ten-part series from Lime Pictures, the All3Media-owned production company behind reality shows such as The Only Way Is Essex and Celebs Go Dating.

The Lovers & The Liars will see a raft of loved up couples compete for a £50,000 (US$70,000) prize. However, not all of the relationships are real and the couples, from their base in Tuscany in Italy, must figure out who is lying. The contestants will take part in a series of relationship tests and must vote out a couple each episode.

It is its latest reality bet this year following series such as Beach Body SOS, The Charlotte Show and Million Dollar Baby.

The show will air on MTV in the UK and across its network of 60 international channels and digital platforms, spanning almost 180 countries, later this year. It was commissioned by MTV Internationals VP Commissioning and Development Craig Orr and Kerry Taylor and will be executive produced by Sarah Tyekiff, who has worked on series including Love Island and Im A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, and was appointed Head of Non-Scripted Programming at Lime Pictures last year.

Tyekiff said The Lovers & The Liars gives the company the opportunity to see a “very different cast take part in a competitive reality show”. “If youre real lovers it doesnt matter what kind of relationship youre in, as long as youre genuinely in love. For the liars, well anything goes. Were confident the viewers are in for something totally different because they wont be told whos real and whos fake. This show gives us real insight into modern day relationships, peoples opinions of them, and a great play along at home.”

Orr said it was an “exciting new area” for MTV. “Not only does this reality format examine what a relationship looks like in 2018, with an incredibly exciting and diverse cast, but it also has a massive hook for those watching at home trying to guess who the real couples are through the many twists and turns of the series.”
