It came down to the wire but NBC just picked up a 22-episode sixth season of The Blacklist, from Sony Pictures TV. There is no final decision yet on the studios other bubble drama series, Timeless.

The Blacklist was a massive hit when it debuted in 2013 behind The Voice on Monday. It took a hit when the network in Season 2 relocated it to shore up Thursday night, using a post-Super Bowl airing to give it a pop. While The Blacklist never came close to the ratings heights of its first season on Monday, it has been a relatively consistent ratings performer, boosted by solid DVR gains.

In its new Wednesday 8 PM slot this season, The Blacklist has averaged a 1.6 rating in 18-49 and 8.8 million viewers in L+7 to improve the time period by +19% in adults 18-49 vs. last year when recently renewed Blindspot aired there.

The Blacklist comes from Sony TV. The network has a 25% ownership stake which has helped during renewal talks but NBC still has been pushing for license fee reduction, something Sony TV could stomach given the series big profits from international sales and the lucrative SVOD pact with Netflix.

The Blacklist was part of a complex negotiation between NBC and Sony TV, that also has included Timeless as well as two pilots that got a pass by NBC, Bad Boys offshoot LAs Finest and comedy Guess Who Died.

The Blacklist stars James Spader as Raymond Reddington, whos back and in the process of rebuilding his criminal empire, one that hell design with Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) by his side. Living with the reality that Red is her father, Liz finds herself torn between her role as an FBI agent and the temptation to act on her more criminal instincts. In a world where the search for Blacklisters has become a family trade, Red will undoubtedly reclaim his moniker as the “Concierge of Crime.”

The Blacklist also stars Diego Klattenhoff, Harry Lennix, Amir Arison, Mozhan Marnò and Hisham Tawfiq.

John Eisendrath, Jon Bokenkamp, John Davis, John Fox, James Spader, Lukas Reiter, J.R. Orci and Carla Kettner serve as executive producers. The Blacklist is a production of Davis Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television and Universal Television.
