Sony Pictures Television is cooking up a series of international culinary flavors after striking a development deal with African producer Quite Bright Films Lifestyle.

The Hollywood studio has closed a multi-project deal to co-develop unscripted cookery formats with the Nairobi, Kenya-based company. Sony will distribute the series to emerge out of the deal internationally. The firm was set up by Daniel Prior and Kiran Jethwa, the latter who was the star of National Geographics The Fearless Chef and Channel 4s Extreme Foods.

The move comes as Hollywood studios look outside of the usual territories to create and develop formats. Africa was a particular focus at the recent Mip TV market in Cannes. A number of producers at the TV confab including Neil Oyenekan, boss of Nigerian producer Lighthouse Television & Filmworks, said that African producers were kicking off plans to start selling formats internationally for the first time. “Were just entering that phase whereby were getting the kind of investment required to make formats that we can take globally,” he said.

Jethwa said: QBFL is extremely excited to be entering into a partnership with SPT. We are confident that it will strengthen and build on our current success and commitment to producing world class entertainment driven and inspired by quality content from the East African region.”

Sarah Edwards, Creative Director of Global Unscripted Formats, SPT added, We are extremely excited to be working with the Quite Bright Films team once more. We are delighted to develop some new and ambitious formats around adventure cookery with Kiran and the team and bring a fresh spin on a genre that continues to entice broadcasters worldwide due to their adaptability and their ability to appeal to a wide audience.”
