We had really hoped Kayla Clifton was the real deal and Craig Tinker was going to get a proper girlfriend at long last. But as was revealed in la recent episode of Coronation Street, Kaylas been keeping a shock secret. She is the daughter of sinister ex-policeman Neil, currently in prison for his part in the underage sex exploitation ring Bethany Platt fell foul of last year. So it looks like Kayla has revenge rather than romance on her mind, since she blames Craig and Bethany for getting her dad banged up. So theyd better watch out!

But Kayla isnt the first wrong un weve seen in soapland, following in the footsteps of a mad, bad parent. Were looking at you, Nico Blake for stabbing your mum Sienna in Hollyoaks, Emmerdales Lachlan White who is already far more deadly than his late mum Chrissie. And EastEnders nasty James Willmott-Brown who manipulated his grown children Josh Hemmings, Luke Browning and Fi Browning into being a part of a secret plot to bulldoze Albert Square to the ground.

Then there are those kids who get accused of doing all sorts just because of their awful parents. Unfair! Like when Corries Fiz Brown suspected little Ruby Soames had developed a violent temper just like her abusive mum Kirsty. Fiz felt foolish when she found it was her own daughter Hope behind a series of shock happenings at home. Yep, its not easy having an infamous parent. Just ask this lot…

Charlie Cotton was on the run from Nasty Nick in EastEnders

7 soap characters with parents from hell
(Picture: BBC)

If your dad was Nasty Nick Cotton, you probably wouldnt want anyone to know. Nick rubbed all of Albert Square up the wrong way, became a heroin addict, fatally stabbed Vic landlord Eddie Royle, tried to kill his mum Dot, got sent to prison and appeared to have died in an explosion at the cafe. But you cant keep a good soap hoodlum down and it was eventually revealed Nick had faked his own death! Anyhow, when Nicks son Charlie first arrived in Walford he probably didnt do himself any favours by posing as a policeman in order to meet and get to know his grandmother, Dot. He was eventually rumbled by Dots family but Charlie proved he was nothing like his dastardly dad and did everything he could to stop Dot being sent to prison after she killed Nick.

Corries Jenny Bradley snatched Kevin Websters son Jack

When you remember Jennys dad was the infamous Alan Bradley – who tried to kill Street legend Rita Fairclough in 1989 and had a fatal collision with a tram while chasing Rita in Blackpool – Jenny could have turned out a lot worse. Sure, shes had some troubled times along the way. Her four-year-old son Tom drowned and when Jenny began dating Kevin Webster, she became obsessed with his young son, Jack. Jenny did a runner with the little boy and Kevin, his daughter Sophie and Rita confronted Jenny as she held Jack dangerously close to the edge of an apartment balcony. Jack was unhurt by Jenny was later arrested and sectioned. But as weve seen since, Jenny has managed to re-build her life, settle in Weatherfield and marry into the Connor family.

Joe Tate wreaked revenge on the Dingles in Emmerdale

It was clearly lust at first sight when Debbie Dingle and businessman Tom Waterhouse first clocked eyes on each other. OK, so their first business meeting was a complete disaster and Debbie called Tom rude and arrogant. But as any soap pro knows, you gotta read between the lines in these situations. And sure enough it wasnt long before Debbie and Tom were snogging like there was no tomorrow! At last, we cheered, Debbie has met her handsome prince who would hopefully end her run of bad luck falling for bad boys (Ross Barton) and serial killers (Cameron Murray).

But no, it turned out Tom Waterhouse was actually Joe Tate, son of ruthless Chris Tate who once lived at Home Farm and was married to Debbies mum Charity. Joe proved he was very much his fathers son when he blamed Charity for his dads suicide and wreaked revenge on her entire family, evicting Debbie and bulldozing the Dingle house. OK, so Joe has sort of redeemed himself since. But just in case he ever forgets what a rotter he once was, his crimes are all here in print!

Before Hollyoaks Grace there was her wicked sister Clare

Long before her sister Grace Black arrived, Clare Devine was the resident bad girl of Hollyoaks Village. Between 2005 to 2013 Clare plotted to kill her hubby Max Cunningham for life insurance money, cheated on Max with Warren Fox, took loads of drugs, made a long-list of enemies, got pushed off the balcony at The Loft, kidnapped Warrens sister Katy and then appeared to die after her car plunged off a cliff. Phew! But with a dad like Fraser Black, its no wonder both Clare and Grace have been spectacularly scheming over the years. After all, Fraser once framed Grace for the attempted murder of Joe Roscoe. Grace definitely didnt send Fraser a Fathers Day card that year. She decided to plot his murder instead! We blame the parents…

Neighbours Robert Robinson was the ultimate evil twin

Considering crafty business man Paul Robinson is the father of seven children (that he knows of!), it was always inevitable there was gonna be a baddie in the bunch. After all, Paul has never won any awards as Father Of The Year, with his shady business dealings, multiple marriages and knack of getting away with murder! But Pauls son Robert was super bad. He caused a car crash that left his twin brother Cameron in a coma, planted a bomb in his sister Elles car and kidnapped Paul and left him trapped in an abandoned mineshaft. We reckon twisted teacher Finn Kelly, who is presently out for revenge on the Kennedy family and friends, could learn a treacherous trick or two from Robert!

Steven Beale tried to kill stepmum Jane in EastEnders

Even though Cindy Beale was trouble, and once hired a hitman to shoot her hated hubby Ian Beale, three of her children, Peter, Lucy and Cindy sort of turned out okay. But the bad un of the bunch was Steven, who blamed Ian for Cindy being sent to prison and later dying. He held Ian captive at an abandoned block of flats and was planning to finish off the job for his beloved mum, until sister Lucy and Ians wife Jane interrupted him.

Steven remained troubled over the years, attempting suicide, struggling with his sexuality and feeling he wasnt fully accepted as part of the family. He briefly found happiness with Lauren Branning and played dad to Lauren and Peters baby son Louie. But it went horribly wrong when Steven spun a lie about having a brain tumour, got Laurens younger sister Abi pregnant and finally perished in a fire at the Beale family restaurant after trying to kill Jane!
