The world of rival salons can get quite vicious apparently – and Audrey Roberts and Maria Connor are about to find that out when Claudia Colby returns and pits them against each other by making Maria a tempting offer.

Maria is left feeling under appreciated by Audrey after having her request to buy into the business rejected and it has led to her secretly setting up shop on her own by taking on private clients in her flat.

But when Audrey discovers this – and learns her own daughter Gail is one of the customers to boot – all hell breaks loose. And with Maria ambitious to further her career, newly returned Claudia – who is played by renowned thespian Rula Lenska – swoops in and takes her under her wing.

Speaking about the storyline, Samia Longchambon explained to Metro.co.uk: Rulas just gorgeous. Maria gets insulted by Audreys rejection and ends up doing Angies hair in her flat, because Angie came in and they didnt have any appointments, so it was just kind of just a one off.

Tracy gets wind of it and starts blackmailing Maria, saying “Im going to tell Audrey unless you do my hair in your flat”, and so its kind of Tracy whos a bit of catalyst for it all, because she then says “you could earn a fortune doing this!” Then, obviously, Audrey finds out shes been doing everyones hair, including Gails – which doesnt go down well! She walks in as Gails sat there with foils in her hair. We had to not laugh doing that!

Maria feels like shes been doing all the work recently, because Audreys been off having her ladies lunches, and Davids been preoccupied, and Bethany has, so its just been all down to Maria and shes not really been getting much credit for it. So thats where its all come from, really.

And Audrey is not happy when she finds out what has been going on – as Samia confirms that she goes mental. But as Marias ambition kicks in, she then accepts an offer from Claudia to invest in her rival salon. However it wont be easy.

Samia continued: Shes not got as much money as I thought she had, because she has to ask people to invest. When Claudia comes in offers her to franchise a salon, Maria needs to find an investor, to find the money, so shes not actually got the money herself.

Maria approaches Carla because theyre family, and obviously she knows Carla is great at business, and with everything thats happened with the factory, she knows that Carla is maybe in the game for investing in something. So, it sort of works, but not for long! I cant say too much…

She added: With Claudias offer, I think she really wants to go for it, because by that point its got so sour with Audrey. Audreys chucking her out of the flat and everything, shes like properly going for her. So I think at that point shes got nothing to lose.

But then, just as Claudia offers Maria the chance to franchise the salon, Audrey comes in the Rovers and says “Ive been a bit harsh on you, I admit it. You dont have to move out of the flat” and just as she says that, Claudia comes in and says “Ooh, were going into business together!” So its one step forward, and two steps back! Maria doesnt hesitate because its a great opportunity for her.

It seems like there is trouble ahead and, with the change of producers behind the scenes, storylines could soon go any way. But Samia takes it all in her stride.

She mused: Im open to it, its always nice when we get a new producer as they come in with fresh ideas and you always sense a shift in the show and the atmosphere of the actual storylines and everything, they change. It just moves, its always transient anyway so you kind of get used to it when theres a new producer.

Kates been brilliant, but I understand that she needs to go now (laughs). Shes been here, what is it, two and a half, three years? I think after a while, they get exhausted, its like a 24 hour job for them. Shes already like superwoman bless her, so I dont think she could sustain that pace.

So, I think its great for her to go off and do a drama afterwards and hopefully she can have a little break before she starts that. But shes been a brilliant producer, shes been great.
