The Apprentice has bid farewell to its first male candidate of the series after David Alden was fired following week twos comic task.

The tax advisor from East Yorkshire is one of 16 people who have been aiming to secure Lord Sugars £250,000 business investment in the latest series of the BBC One show.

However Wednesday night saw him given his marching orders in the boardroom after failing to pass muster in a task which saw the teams having to create a new comic for 8-12-year-olds.

David – who revealed on the show he writes childrens stories as a hobby – was given the job of coming up with the script after the boys created a spaceman character called Benji in the task.

He tried to pin the failure of the task on project manager Frank – but despite Lord Sugar agreeing that he had been a diabolical PM, he ultimately gave David the boot anyway.

Your hobby is writing stories, and this was a load of rubbish this story – absolute garbage, Lord Sugar told him, pointing out

You go into a pitch, read out the negative parts of your own product…youve got no business acumen, and for that reason youre fired.

Ouch.

Frank should have been fired today…its all about the creativity at the top, David said afterwards as he took his taxi home.

Im just so so so gutted to go at this early stage when I had so so much more to give.

Next week will see the 14 remaining candidates put their selling skills to the test as they have to create their own range of doughnuts – and then sell them to punters on the streets of London.

The Apprentice continues next Wednesday night on BBC One at 9pm.
