Simon Cowell started a running joke on The X Factor on Saturday by claiming he felt drunk after Giovanni Spanos performance.

Gio took to the stage armed with a dizzying amount of circus paraphernalia and tried his hand at James Bonds Live and Let Die against a backdrop of burlesque dancers, bendy gymnasts and what appeared to be all the pyrotechnics in the world.

Not forgetting those *extremely* high notes from the man himself.

Coming down from the performance, Simon reflected on what he had just watched and joked that the crazy experience had made him feel intoxicated.

I feel like Ive just had 25 bottles of beer, like Im drunk, the 59-year-old media mogul said.

This is the craziest night weve ever had but who cares. You actually – certainly at the end – it just reminded us you actually have an amazing voice.

But it was so wacky, the whole thing, but I really hope you stay because you are so much fun.

It was then time for Ayda to give her honest opinion but her speech was interrupted by a noise from Simon, prompting Robbies wife to speculate if the head judge was indeed drunk and disorderly after all.

Simons clearly overwhelmed, she cut in. Hes drunk too many beers.

The dad-of-one appeared amused by the comment but remained tight-lipped, simply scrunching his eyes with laughter and sharing a muffled giggle with neighbouring judge Louis Tomlinson.

The interruption didnt seem to effect Ayda too much, however, as she continued her gushing eulogy of the West End star.

Listen, everything you bring to this show, is pure entertainment, the actress enthused. You bring so much energy and fun and if there was one contestant I was going to buy a ticket to a show to, it would be yours.

As Giovanni thanked his mentor for her kind words, host Dermott OLeary decided he wasnt quite ready for the joke to be over and added to Simon: 25 beers was it?, to which he simply gave a coy smile.

It was an eventful night for The X Factor live show, which was already enjoying a world first after producers revealed they had pre-recorded it to include Robbie Williams ahead of his South American tour.

The Fright Night theme of the night gave birth to many a weird and wonderful costume, while the show was also plagued by robotic sound and technical issues, leading producers to scrap the live vote completely.
