Nearly a year after her husband was accused of sexual harassment by a former employee, Catherine Zeta-Jones is opening up about what it was like to consider those allegations as a supporter of the #MeToo movement.

In January, Susan Braudy, a journalist and author who worked for Douglass production company in the late 1980s, said that the actor once masturbated in front of her during a script meeting at his home. She also alleged that he was prone to making vulgar jokes and comments about her body during their time working together. In a statement at the time, Douglas called Braudys claim “an unfortunate and complete fabrication.” Speaking with The Sunday Times, Zeta-Jones, who has been married to Douglas for 18 years, said, “My children and I were profoundly devastated by those allegations. And I was torn about where my absolute morals lie.”

“This woman came out of nowhere and accused my husband,” Zeta-Jones continued. “I had a very big conversation with him, with the kids in the room, and said, Do you understand if more comes out. . . .”

Zeta-Jones acknowledged the paradox of her situation to the Times: shes a #MeToo supporter who believes women generally when they come forward with accusations, but she does not believe these particular allegations against her husband. “It was a really hard position for me and, in the height of it all, it was nasty,” the actress said. Zeta-Jones added that Douglas told her and his children “that there is no story here and that time will tell. And, of course, it did.”

Zeta-Jones added that unsubstantiated claims “[knock] the movement back 20 years.”

On Tuesday, Zeta-Jones followed the interview up with a Today show appearance, in which she explained what prompted her to call such a family meeting. “When you have kids that didnt ask to be born into a world where its scrutinized or looked into, youve got to be open and honest and share things that people at the drug store probably wouldnt share over the counter,” she said.

When asked if her husband faces too much scrutiny, however, the actress did not hesitate: “No, not at all!” she said with a laugh. “Michael is doing just fine.”
