Doctor Who is bringing a midwife onto the Tardis – as Charlotte Ritchie has been confirmed to star in the New Years Day special.

The Call the Midwife star has been announced in the latest round of guest stars to be heading off on an adventure with the Doctor and her companions Graham, Yaz and Ryan.

Charlottes playing a character called Lin, although sneaky BBC bosses are keeping her role under wraps for now.

She is joining Nikesh Patel, who will play a character called Mitch, and Daniel Adegboyega, who will play a man called Aaron.

Information over the special has been thin on the ground, although weve been promised it will be spectacular.

Weve been warned that a terrifying evil is stirring from across the centuries of Earths history, and will cause trouble for the team come New Years Day.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall wrote the episode, and previously teased: Were thrilled to be starting the New Year with a bang on BBC One, as Jodie Whittakers Doctor and friends face a terrifying alien threat in an action-packed, hour-long special adventure for all the family.

But while it may be spectacular, actress Mandip Gill, who plays Yaz, has admitted that shes not sure how festive its going to be.

Speaking to Radio Times, she hinted the cast didnt know whether the episode would be part of the series or a standalone episode.

Mandip explained: When we were filming, we didnt know when it was going to air. Weve only just found out with you guys.

Doctor Whos New Years special airs New Years Day at 7pm on BBC1.
