In the hours on Saturday after Pete Davidson posted a disturbing message on Instagram, then deleted his entire account, a host of celebrities reached out to show their support to him on social media, with Jon Cryer tweeting that Davidson was “at S.N.L. and accounted for.” It took until nearly the end of Saturdays Matt Damon-hosted episode, though, for Davidson to make a live appearance, introducing the second performance from musical guests Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson. His only appearance in a sketch was a pre-taped segment about Oscar host auditions, in which he impersonated Rami Malek.

Davidson, who has been open in the past about his mental health struggles, posted to Instagram on Saturday morning a message that read, in part, "I really don't want to be on this earth anymore.” Among the celebrities who showed their support on social media were Ariana Grande, who ended her engagement to Davidson in October: “I know u have everyone u need and thats not me, but im here too,” she wrote. The NYPD told news outlets that they had checked in on Davidson and he was “safe,” then referred all comments to NBC. The network and Saturday Night Live did not comment on Davidson before the show aired.

The goodnights segment at the end of the show was cut short, but Davidson was not visible standing with the rest of the cast. Unlike the last time Davidsons name was in the headlines, immediately after his breakup with Grande, this was a matter he and his castmates decided to keep off the air.
