Never mind Bob Hope, it seems Christmas is going to have no hope as the penniless and lonely local faces a very bleak time of it in Emmerdale. Is there any chance of a festive miracle for the down and out love cheat?

Since his relationship with Laurel Thomas shattered, Bob has been trying to scrape his life back together but his bills are mounting and of course, Christmas isnt exactly the cheapest time of year. So when Bob realises that he cant afford presents for the twins, he is crushed and even considers stealing charity hospital gifts.

Reflecting on his alter egos miserable time, Tony Audenshaw told Metro.co.uk: The situation at Christmas is that hes not homeless but hes deeply in debt. Pollard gives him a bill at the B&B that he cant afford to pay. Hes working there doing shifts but hes behind on the money.

Hes taking any jobs he can and Harriet says, “I need a Santas elf” and he thinks, brilliant, itll be a shopping centre, Ill get some money in, and then after he gets the costume, it turns out its at a local childrens hospital and theres no money involved, he just gets paid with a mince pie. On Christmas Eve, hes at the hospital, dressed like an idiot with Father Christmas. He hasnt got his kids anything and he thinks about stealing one of Santas presents because hes so desperate. When he gets out of the hospital after doing a shift for no money, he learns his car has been towed with his wallet in it. Hes having a pretty bad Christmas.

And it seems that no-one really knows the full extent of Bobs troubles as he is too proud to admit that he is struggling.

Tony explained: It is lonely. The thing is, everyone is obviously so concentrated on what theyre doing with their own family and friends – of course, as they should be – that you just assume everyone is okay. Financially, Christmas is a difficult time for everyone; kids are very demanding and you feel like you should go out for a drink. Hes in a situation where he cant even afford to go out on a Christmas do with his mates because buying a few rounds of drinks for £20, he just doesnt have that sort of money.

The storyline looks more, at this stage, at the financial side of things. As it develops, it looks more at the person within a village and how people do care when they find out somethings wrong. Bobs been in this sort of situation before when he first came into the show. He had a lot of ex-wives and he was paying money to his kids. He was sleeping in his car then. Hes quite resilient and he will just stick it out. As long as hes still going, hes not bothered.

However, that said, Tony is ruling out a Christmas miracle and hinted things will get worse before they get better for Bob.

And his character is capable at sinking lower to keep himself afloat.

He sighed: I think he can go very low! He feels terrible but hes aware its his own doing. Brenda has said it on more than one occasion that hell end up with nothing and thats the way its going to go for him.
