Vikings season six will be the final season of the show.

History Channel has confirmed that Vikings will end with its sixth season, due to air later this year.

However it might not be the last we see of Ivar, Lagertha, Torvi and the rest, as creator Michael Hirst is said to be in talks for a series that will continue the Vikings story, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Season six wrapped filming last year and the show is currently airing its fifth run.

So far in season 5B Lagertha has done a disappearing act after the death of her lover Heahmund, and Bjorn tried to cut a deal with Harald, promising the Kingdom of Kattegat following Ivars death.

The show previously aired a spin-off episode centered on Bjorn, so they could revisit a similar format in the new series.

Rumours that the end of Vikings was in sight first came in November when cast members Jordan Patrick Smith, who plays Ubbe, and Georgia Hirst, who plays Torvi, both shared pictures on Instagram of the Vikings team together for one big group shot.

Love was definitely in the air as the actors gushed over the people that make the show, with Hirst writing the message: I love you all so much.

Smith wrote: What an amazing group of humans.

Fans speculated that the photos were some sort of farewell, with one commenting: Wait, is Vikings completely done filming the whole series? I know all stories have to come to an end but Ill be sad to see Vikings go.

Floki, Lagertha, Ivar, Harald and Rollo were absent from the group picture – was it a hint that the beloved characters dont make it to the end?
