Vikings writer Michael Hirst is giving us a bit of a dull series, as hes taking down some of our much loved characters one by one.

Last week the 66-year-old wrote out Bishop Heahmund, and might as well have killed off Lagertha too, as she hasnt returned since her beaus death.

And this week it was Aethelred who fell foul to Hirsts wrath – as he was slaughtered by his own mother in episode six: The Buddha.

But it seems Darren Cahill, who played the now deceased prince, took the news of his characters death well as he trolled himself on Instagram.

Sharing a picture of himself and Jennie Jacques, who plays Princess Judith (aka his murderous mother), the actor could be seen eating poison lolly pops fed to him by his co-star.

Making light of no longer being in the show, the star thanked his fans and laughed at the savage story line.

In the caption, he wrote: Aethelreds story ends here. What a journey. A highlight for me was working with the wonderful Moe, Jennie & Ferdia as a saxon family.

What a way for him to leave aye? But I do love that Aethelred & Alfreds love for each other shone through by not killing each other when they both had the chance, my favourite part his journey on the show I think.

Darren added: Most of all Thank you to all the amazing @historyvikings fans for all your love and support. All your nice messages & comments warm my heart. Its been a pleasure & I hope you enjoyed the journey.

He then laughed: But really what kind of mother is she??

More: Vikings

It seems therell be more character deaths to come, as earlier today the History Channel confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that season six will see the end of the hit series.

However, despite the axe it might not be the last of our favourite Nordics, as the publication teased Hirst is looking to extend the Vikings franchise with a new series.
