Victoria newcomer Laurence Fox has revealed that his take on Lord Palmerston was inspired by none other than Boris Johnson.

With the hit ITV series, starring Jenna Coleman, returning to ITV tonight the 40-year-old joined Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford for This Morning on Sunday to confess that he mimicked the MP on the advice of the series creator.

Laurence, who plays the charismatic and wayward Foreign Secretary, told the hosts: I got a few emails from [series creator] Daisy Goodwin saying, “More like Boris Johnson.”

I was backing off it a bit but she wanted more Boris Johnson so I added Boris Johnson and Willy Wonka. Some might say I overcooked it somewhat, who knows?

Laurence revealed that he decided to throw Willy Wonka into the mix when he discovered a prop lying around the costume department.

I found this cane in costume and I nicked it and I started twiddling it around, which solved my acting hands, he explained.

Laurence went on to reveal that his character Lord Palmerston initially clashes with Victoria and Albert, telling Ruth and Eamonn: I think hes probably a little bit sexist, maybe.

He thinks, “What is this woman doing as Queen?” Hes one of those people that just pokes the elephant in the room at all times anyway.

He likes to see where someones limit is.

Victoria returns Sunday at 9pm on ITV.
