It may have started as a spin-off, but Law & Order: SVU has proven its own worth by becoming the longest-running live-action series in prime time television history.

The renewal of the drama for a 21st series secured its status as a record-breaking show after 20 years on air.

Celebrating the news on Instagram, the shows star, executive producer and sometimes-director Mariska Hargitay said she was profoundly proud of the work the team had done and assured fans that they were not finished.

We have broken this ground together, she continued

SVU first premiered in 1999 as a spin-off series to creator Dick Wolfs hugely successful Law & Order, which wrapped after 20 series.

Until today, SVU was tied with its forerunner for the title of longest-running prime time show alongside 50s favourite Western Gunsmoke.

The show is beaten to the title of longest-running show ever by The Simpsons, which is currently in its 30th season.

NBC bosses praised the cast and crew for their dedication and work towards achieving the milestone, saying in a statement: We tip our cap to Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay and the amazing cast and crew of SVU, who now all go into the record book.

This incredible run is an example of what happens when producers, writers and actors all come together and create a show that, year after year, speaks to its audience in a powerful way.

We couldnt be more proud of this remarkable achievement.

SVU focuses its detectives on crimes with vulnerable victims, such as rape, sexual assault and domestic violence and while Mariskas character Olivia Benson has remained a stalwart of the series throughout its 20 year tenure on NBC, she has worked with an impressive number of stars in that time.

Bradley Cooper, Sex And The Citys Cynthia Nixon, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Willliams are just some of the many guest stars who have appeared on SVU.
