Jon Stewarts Political Satire Irresistible: Everything We Know

Less than a year after news of Jon Stewarts new political satire film, Irresistible, first broke, its cast is growing more tantalizing by the day. This will be the former Daily Show hosts second film, after 2014s Rosewater, which Stewart directed toward the end of his late-night tenure—but given this new films stacked team and humorous political bent, this project could be a lot bigger than Stewarts first movie.

News of the project first broke last October. Steve Carell is set to star in the film, making it a reunion for the two comedians; Carell served as a correspondent on The Daily Show during the Stewart era. According to Entertainment Weekly, the film takes place “amidst a political campaign.” Deadline elaborates further, reporting that Carell will play a Democrat political consultant.

Since last fall, several other names have been added to the film—most recently, Topher Grace, fresh off his BlaKkKlansman turn as David Duke. Chris Cooper, Rose Byrne, and Mackenzie Davis will star as well. According to Variety, specifics about Graces role are being kept secret—but we do know that Cooper is set to play a retired ex-Marine colonel running for mayor in a small Wisconsin town. Carells character will help Coopers with his campaign, while Byrne will play the Republican political consultant working on the opposing, incumbent campaign. Davis, Variety reports, will play Coopers daughter. Given the obvious missing character here, it seems possible that Grace could play the Republican candidate—but thats just convenient conjecture on our part.

Stewart left The Daily Show to Trevor Noah in 2015, and since then has kept a largely low profile. He opened an animal sanctuary near his New Jersey home, allowing Stewart to transition from excoriating politicians and the media to a gentler, cuddlier life spent rescuing goats. Shortly after his Daily Show retirement, Stewart was supposed to produce a multi-platform animated series for HBO—but both parties eventually opted to cancel the project due to technical issues. In 2017, however, the two parties announced an even more exciting prospect: Stewarts first stand-up special in 20 years, which will premiere. . . sometime. Stewart is writing the screenplay for Irresistible, and producing it alongside Brad Pitts Plan B Entertainment—which has won Oscars for The Departed, 12 Years a Slave, and, most recently, Moonlight.
