President Donald Trump says hes giving strong considerations to placing illegal immigrants in so-called sanctuary cities only.

He tweeted the idea on Friday just hours after the White House said it was no longer under consideration.

Trump accused Democrats of failing to overhaul immigration laws as he said: The Radical Left always seems to have an Open Borders, Open Arms policy – so this should make them very happy!

The president then told reporters at the White House that if leaders of those districts and municipalities really want to open their arms to immigrants, we can give them an unlimited supply.

He said: Theyre always saying they have open arms. Lets see if they have open arms.

Homeland Security officials said as recently as Friday morning that the sanctuary cities idea has been discussed, but quickly dismissed, after lawyers voiced opposition.

Sanctuary cities are places where authorities dont work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to round up those living in the country illegally.

The plan was panned by critics as an effort to use migrants as pawns to go after political opponents.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said rounding up immigrants and shipping them to sanctuary cities is disrespectful to the nations challenges.

She said the idea is just another notion that is unworthy of the president of the United States and disrespectful of the challenges we face.

Trumps new idea comes days after it emerged illegal immigration to the US is at its highest for 12 years despite the presidents vow to crack down.

The number of people who crossed the Mexican border illegally skyrocketed to 103,492 in March – hitting a 12-year-high.

Of those, 92,607 were apprehended by US Customs and Border Patrol, who have detained over 361,000 people at the southwest border this year, which is more than double the amount of migrants detained by April of last year – and all of 2017.
