Girl Power: Animated Spice Girls Movie From the Legally Blonde Writing Team Is Coming

Hollywood is in the midst of a music-nostalgia renaissance, sparked by the success of films like Mamma Mia!, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Rocketman. And with upcoming films about Céline Dion, Prince, and David Bowie in the works, its clear the trend of Greatest Hits Cinema isnt going away anytime soon. And now, like Queen and ABBA before them, theres another music group getting fresh movie treatment: the Spice Girls.
Yes, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the 90s British girl group is (once again) getting the movie treatment—but with a twist. Paramount is working on an animated feature that will be produced by longtime Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller and written by Karen McCullah and Kiwi Smith, the two writers behind Legally Blonde and 10 Things I Hate About You.
All five of the Spice Girls—Mel B (Scary), Emma Bunton (Baby), Melanie C (Sporty), Geri Halliwell (Ginger), and Victoria Beckham (Posh)—are apparently on board for the project and will be “very involved” in it, Paramount Animation president Mireille Soria tells THR. The film will feature their classic tracks as well as new songs.
This will be the second Spice Girls movie since 1997s Spice World, a cult hit that starred the singers as fictionalized versions of themselves dealing with fame and preparing for the biggest concert of their lives. Though it wasnt a hit with critics, Spice World was a box office smash and a beloved totem of the girl groups popularity at the time. It also costarred international treasures Richard E. Grant and Alan Cumming; heres hoping those actors get to come full circle and land parts in the animated movie as well.
Though they eventually splintered off into separate careers, the Spice Girls—sans Posh—have since reunited for a six-date stadium tour in the U.K., which kicked off this month and will end on June 15. Beckham, who pivoted to the fashion world after rising to fame with the girl group, wished them well with a cheery, nostalgic Instagram post: “Good luck to the girls today as they start their tour! x VB #SpiceGirls #FriendshipNeverEnds.”
Now fans will get the proper Spice Girls reunion theyve been waiting for—even if it is through the lens of an animated movie.
