How would the late, great Judy Garland have reacted to the Lady Gaga-starring A Star Is Born remake? Her daughter Liza Minnelli has a guess: in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the performer said that Garland “would have laughed.”
Wow! It appears, though, that Minnelli did not want to rib Lady Gaga too hard. The singer followed up her comment by adding, “And then she would have gotten into it. I can hear her saying, O.K., lets go! Great to the end!”
The original A Star Is Born first premiered in 1937, with stars Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. Garland starred in the first remake in 1954; since then, each generation has seen its own play on the story. The Bradley Cooper-directed 2018 release in which Gaga starred was the fourth reimagination so far, and likely wont be the last. (Just give Zendaya and Gen Z a few years, and well see what happens.) Gaga and Coopers version was a huge hit, both as a viral phenomenon and as a brand booster for both Cooper and Gaga, who made the Academy swoon with a performance of “Shallow” at the Oscars earlier this year.
Minnelli is understandably protective of her mothers legacy, especially as a new biopic, Judy, is set to debut in September. Minnelli responded to reports last summer that she and Reneé Zellweger, who will star in the film, had bonded. “I have never met nor spoken to Renee Zellweger,” Minnelli wrote on Facebook. “I dont know how these stories get started, but I do not approve nor sanction the upcoming film about Judy Garland in any way. Any reports to the contrary are 100% fiction.”
Judy will focus on the year of Garlands life before her death, as she prepared for several sold-out shows in London in 1968 while also struggling with a number of professional and personal issues, including her longtime drug addiction. As hard as it might be to believe, Judy is actually the first big-screen biopic about Garlands life; the closest fans previously got was the Emmy-winning miniseries Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows, an adaptation of her daughter Lorna Lufts memoir.
When E.T. asked Minnelli about the film, she said she hadnt seen anything, but complimented Zellweger. “I think shes a wonderful actress,” Minnelli said, “and I just hope they dont do what they always do. Thats all Ive got to say.”
