AOC Subtly Ribs Beto for His Gratuitous Debate Spanish

On Wednesday nights live edition of The Late Show, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stopped by to give her review of the first Democratic debate. Chief among her thoughts? That Elizabeth Warren was the obvious star of the night.

“She knocked it out of the park,” Ocasio-Cortez said of the Massachusetts senator. AOC also praised Julián Castro, one of the nights breakout heavy hitters, for doing a “phenomenal job.” However, she stopped short of endorsing a candidate just yet. There is, after all, a second Democratic debate on Thursday night, which will feature Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Bernie Sanders (whom AOC used to work for as an organizer), among others.

The congresswoman also gave a thumbs-up to Wednesday night debate competitors like Senator Cory Booker and Mayor Bill de Blasio, a fellow New Yorker. And when host Stephen Colbert pressed AOC to say something, anything, about the other debaters on the stage (including Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Gov. Jay Inslee, for example), the usually chatty politician drew a blank. “Um, I think that…” she began, trailing off before offering these words of advice: “Sometimes youre an underdog until youre not!”

And though she didnt mention him by name, Ocasio-Cortez might have subtly shaded Beto ORourke, who broke out in Spanish more than once during the debate—which led to him being mocked on Twitter for avoiding answers to questions in not one, but two languages. “It was humorous at times,” AOC said, noting that the use of Spanish onstage came off as a dodge.
