A married couple with two young boys were diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses within weeks of one another.
Life for Rachel and Alex Gutierrez from Shoreview, Minnesota, changed dramatically in a short space of time when they were both diagnosed with separate illnesses.
In March, Rachel was entered into a clinical trial at Mayo Clinic.
The mother of two sons, ages 7 and 10, says shes coded as radiologically isolated syndrome, which means I have MS (multiple sclerosis) on paper and scans but cant treat it.
A short time after Rachel was admitted to the trial, her husband Alex suffered a seizure. After undergoing tests, he was diagnosed with brain cancer.
Alex described the moment which dramatically changed their family life : We were just out with the kids and I went to talk to them and I just couldnt. My mouth just didnt work.

They did a biopsy and turned out I had glioblastoma, which is a pretty aggressive kind of brain cancer, Alex added.
The endless doctors visits resulted in the couple leaving their jobs and temporarily moving the family to Rochester, New York, nearly two hours away from their home, in order be closer to Alexs treatment facility.
Alex has been receiving proton radiation which causes side effects.
