The day all Jane The Virgin fans have been dreading is finally upon us, as the show has ended after five glorious seasons, and 100 episodes.

Its not another beautiful day to be Rogelio today.

But as the last chapter closes on Jane Gloria Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and her rollercoaster family, we cant help but feel a little sad that we wont get our weekly dose of telenovela goodness, and also a solid 43 minutes to ignore real issues happening off screen.

Instead of being battered with Brexit updates, and dealing with the ever-changing weather, we were able to shut the curtain and give in to a slice of ridiculousness, sprinkled with some life lessons and Rafael (Justin Baldoni), of course.

After spending the last five years being glued to our screens, shocked at every twist, turn, fake deaths and real shootings, were still thirsty for more – which is one of the reasons well miss the gang so much.

The rollerocaster started off as Jane paid a now-infamous visit to her doctor Luisa, who managed to accidentally artificially inseminate her with Rafaels sperm, despite her being a virgin at the time. A crazy, bizarre premise but absolutely nothing compared to what viewers had in store over the next five years.

Following some umming and ahhing, Jane went through with the pregnancy – even though she was happily engaged to Michael (Brett Dier) at the time – welcoming son Mateo and eventually started dating Rafael, all while trying to write a book, taking care of her family, and actually lose her virginity.

All of the above – and so much more – discussed by a sassy, off-screen narrator.

Jane The Virgin's Jane and Michael

She has truly been through it all. Forget Phil Mitchell, every ridiculous trope you can think of in a soap opera, shes had it thrown her way and come out the other side, even stronger than before. Drug barons have tried to kill her, shes had a previously presumed dead husband turn up at her door, alive and well, and had to deal with dad Rogelio (Jamie Camil) being one of the biggest TV stars known to man.

But its not just the ridiculous moments, like Petras psychotic mum with a hook for an arm, or random TV shows within a TV show – looking at you, Life On Mars – that the show manages to capture so well, its real life issues.

Jane The Virgin gives a voice to Latinx community, putting Latinx issues in mainstream media, and does so unapologetically. Through the Villanueva familys traditions, actions, language, games, and even the food they eat, viewers are given real insight into identities that are rarely shown in wider culture otherwise. We watched as Abuela was faced with the threat of deportation when she was rushed to hospital, only to find that she didnt have the correct papers.

Jane had to deal with becoming a widow at such a young age, with Michael dying in series three – and while the writers could have led us straight down the telenovela route and made the whole thing ridiculous, we were instead shown just how she really dealt with her grief, and how it still affected her years later, instead of it being glossed over.

Jane The Virgin's Xiomara

Xiomara has also faced her fair share of ups and downs (Picture: Poppy Productions)

Her mum, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo), had to battle with breast cancer while trying to retain her identity as the strong, independent member of the family, has a frank storyline about not wanting to have more children when Rogelio suggests expanding their family, and had a major career change in a bid to follow her dreams.

Okay, yes, there are moments the viewers feel like they could throttle Jane. Her indecisiveness in choosRead More – Source
