Helen McCrory has admitted that shes considered leaving Peaky Blinders behind as fans get ready to catch up with the family in season five.

Peaky Blinders and the Shelby Boys just wouldnt have lasted this long if it wasnt for their beloved Aunt Polly keeping them in check.

The unofficial organiser of the operation, the character, played by Helen, manages to knock down Cillian Murphys leading man Tommy down a peg or two better than any other.

Earning the respect of Birmingham South, she is definitely one not to be messed with and is one of the shows leading iconic characters – but there was a fleeting moment she almost bowed out early.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other publications, Helen admitted that she has considered putting Aunt Pols ever-present cigarette down for good.

She said: I have had a weekend of considering just this, with a wonderful, wonderful offer of another thing, with someone I think is one of the most talented people.

I said no, and came back to this, because I feel its given me so much, and I think that you behave well in some things and see it through to the end if somebody wants you to.

You dont just go “thank you” [and leave], she added. Also I want to see it through to the end.

When asked what she thought the boys would do without her, Helen joked: I think Tommy would just snort himself to death and Arthur would be found in some opium den.

The lasting legacy of the troubled period gangster drama is one of the most beloved series the BBC has released this decade – earning a festival in its honour in their hometown of Birmingham later this year.

Helen admitted that despite appearing as Narcissa Malfoy in Harry Potter, one of the biggest franchises the UK has ever created, Peaky Blinders still beats it – so why would she want to leave?

She told us: Ive never…. I have friends who are actors, Im married to an actor, Im used to people saying “oh Ive liked this” Ive never had anything thats had the Peaky Blinders effect. Its bigger than Harry Potter. For me.

A lot of people just go “my son got me into you!”, the actress continued. Mainly in black cabs, which is where I spend a lot of my time. Its quite a broad demographic.
