Angry parents have been in uproar over one of Channel 4s latest documentaries that encourages parents to train their babies like dogs.

The documentary, How To Train Your Baby Like A Dog, sees dog trainer and animal behaviorist Jo-Rosie Haffenden showing parents how to use dog training techniques to help their children behave.

Some of the controversial methods included using a clicker and commanding one child to sit.

In the first episode, Haffenden – who admitted to using the methods on her own children – assists a mother and her three-year-old boy deal with his tantrums and an 18-month-old who refuses to sleep in her cot.

At the start of the program the dog trainer says: I dont understand why we havent been applying animal techniques to humans, universally.

But the unusual concept has rubbed a few people up the wrong way, with thousands signing a petition to get the show axed before it had even aired.

A Change.org petition was signed by 25,000 people who claimed the show was dehumanising for children and could potentially turn those involved in the program into prime target[s] for grooming in the future as they will have been taught to comply to an adults demands, regardless of their own comfort or autonomy for reward.

Another method that was criticised was the clicker which describes taking a childs favourite object and using it to bribe a child into doing a chore or task.

Some viewers that stayed to watch the show were left disgusted and feeling sick watching the animalistic methods being used, with a few even switching off their TVs altogether.

One viewer tweeted: Horrified watching @Channel4 #trainyourbabylikeadog utterly irresponsible. Demonstrates no understanding of the emotional needs of babies and little people. Get it off air.

Another worried viewer posted: Im seriously concerned how close #trainyourbabylikeadog is to abuse. Appalling failure. Drs and MBEs and professional who know what they are talking about have been trying to tell you for days how disgusting this is. @Channel4 is a joke.

One person even commented: I am utterly raging at the arrogance of this trainer and lack of understanding of *actual humans*. #TrainYourBabyLikeADog is simply shocking and I cant believe it was allowed to proceed.

But not everyone was opposed to the program, with some claiming that viewers are exaggerating about how bad the show is.

One person tweeted: I was expecting the worst, but it wasnt that bad. No time outs, no naughty steps, no punishments at all. Just rewards for good behaviour, confidence building & hugs instead of leaving the baby to cry it out. Is that really so awful? It seemed to work. #trainyourbabylikeadog

While another tweeted: People complaining about #trainyourbabylikeadog should actually watch it theyre not actually treating the kids like dogs lol theyre just showing the techniques that are transferable.

I have a degree in Psychology and studied human behaviour #trainyourbabylikeadog was perfectly fine. Kids needed security, love, trust and to have parents attention. The title of the program made it sound worse!
