Genome sequencing of over 1,000 Indians done by CSIR

In an advancement that can help couples detect if they have any genetic issue that can imperil their offspring, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has done genome sequencing of 1,008 Indians from different populations across the country.
The outcomes of the Indi-Gen initiative — undertaken by CSIR earlier this year — will have applications in a number of areas, including predictive and preventive medicine with faster and efficient diagnosis of rare genetic diseases, science and technology minister Harsh Vardhan said. Genome sequencing is the process of figuring out the order of DNA nucleotides, or bases, in a genome. The genome data from the analysis can be used for understanding the genetic diversity, make available genetic variant frequencies for clinical applications and enable genetic epidemiology of diseases.
It is also expected to enable evidence and aid in the development of technologies for clinical and biomedical applications in India.
