Withdrawal of SPG cover vindictive, govt playing with lives of Gandhis: Congress

NEW DELHI: Congress on Friday cried personal vendetta by PM Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah after the Centre decided to withdraw SPG cover to the Gandhi family and said it was tantamount to “playing with their lives”.
Even as Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi did not comment on the decision, Priyanka turned the withdrawal of SPG cover into a jibe on the failing economy under the Modi government. However, she deleted her tweet after some time.
Rahul tweeted his appreciation of the SPG later in the day, lauding their dedicated service to him and his family. “A big thank you to all my brothers and sisters in the SPG who worked tirelessly to protect me and my family over the years. Thank you for your dedication, your constant support and for a journey filled with affection. It has been a privilege. All the best for a great future,” he said.
Congress, meanwhile, swung from righteous indignation to asserting that the Gandhi family would not be cowered down by the governments attempted effort to “intimidate” them. Congress secretary K C Venugopal and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged that Modi and Shah were “blinded by personal revenge and political vendetta in withdrawing SPG cover from the Gandhis”. The party tweeted a couplet playing on the familys sacrifice — the assassinations of former PMs Indira and Rajiv Gandhi — to assert that the Gandhis were not afraid of death.
