Rafale defence deal: Factbox

The Supreme Court on Thursday gave clean chit to the Modi government on the purchase of 36 fully-loaded Rafale fighter jets from French company Dassault Aviation, rejecting the plea for registration of an FIR by the CBI for alleged commission of cognisable offence in the deal.

1. What is the Rafale deal issue?
   In 2016, the Defence Ministry of India signed a deal with France's Dassault Aviation for purchase of 36 new Rafale fighter jets for 7.87 billion euro. The opposition Congress party accused BJP govt of buying the aircraft at nearly three times the price that was being negotiated by a Congress-led govt before PM Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. On November 14, 2019, the Supreme Court of India rejected petitions seeking a probe into the matter.
2. When will India get Rafale?
   The first Rafales aircraft is due to arrive in India in May 2020. The deliveries are expected to be completed by 2022.
3. How many more Rafale jets will India get?
   The Indian Air Force has been keen to acquire at least 36 more Rafale jets. The infrastructure to accommodate these is already in place.
