Viacoms Channel 5 has acquired the UK rights to Shenae Grimes-Beech and Angela Griffin-fronted procedural The Detail from Entertainment One (eOne) and has also picked up the second window rights to Kiefer Sutherland-fronted Designated Survivor.
The British broadcaster previously aired a raft of North American procedurals such as NCIS and The Mentalist before its aggressive move into original content and the deal marks one of its most high-profile procedural buys in a few years.
Grimes-Beech, which follows three female homicide detectives, told Deadline last week that she was keen to play such a “badass” role.
The show is produced by ICF Films in association with eOne for Canadian broadcaster CTV and has already been picked up by Ion in the U.S. It is one of eOnes hot titles at Mip TV.
The deal was brokered by Patrick Roberts, VP International Sales, eOne, Katie Keenan, VP, Head of Acquisitions, Channel 5 and VIMN UK and Cherry Yeandle, Acting Acquisitions and Channel Manager, for Channel 5.
It has also been licensed to TNT Nordic, Fox Networks (Middle East), Yes DBS (Israel), Cosmote TV (Greece), SBS Belgium and France Televisions.
C5s acquisition of Designated Survivor is also interesting as the political terror drama airs on Netflix around the world and is one of the first times a high-profile linear broadcaster has picked up the second window to a drama that debuts on Netflix.
Keenan said, “We are thrilled to be working with eOne in bringing these high quality drama series, staring award-winning talent, to Channel 5s portfolio of free to air services.”
“We are delighted to see so many of our partners acquiring The Detail, and have no doubt that this female led, contemporary, police procedural will deliver primetime success as it rolls out across the region,” added Dan Gopal, eOnes Executive Vice President of Sales, EMEA, International Distribution.
