This is the terrifying message that was sent to students after reports of an active shooter on campus.

Howard University in Washington DC was locked down on Tuesday afternoon.

Active shooter report forces lock down at Washington DC university campus

Students received a frantic text message that read: ‘ALERT!! There is a report of an ARMED person throughout the campus shelter in place while police investigate.’

A screenshot of the message was tweeted by Howard’s class of 21 with the caption: ‘PLEASE TAKE SHELTER AND COVER NOW.’

Part of the campus was evacuated while emergency services arrived on the scene and swept the area. Others stayed inside and hid.
