West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has admitted the appointment of David Moyes as the club’s new manager is ‘a gamble’.

The Scot has been handed a six-month deal at the London Stadium to help turn around the Hammers’ dreadful start to the season.

West Ham’s move for Moyes has been greeted by dismay from many of the club’s fans, given his lack of success since leaving Everton for Manchester United in 2013.

Moyes signed a six-year deal to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, but he lasted only ten months with the Red Devils going on to their worst even Premier League finish.

He then went to Spain with Real Socidead but only lasted a year there, and also left his most recent job at Sunderland after a single season following their relegation to the Championship.

Moyes joined talkSPORT for an exclusive interview on Tuesday and expressed his determination to prove his doubters wrong following his move to east London.

Sullivan has admitted the club took a risk by turning to the 54-year-old, but has backed Moyes to turn things around for the struggling side.

In an interview with The Sun, the Hammers chief said: “This is a gamble but let’s see where we are at the end of the season. I believe he will keep us up.

“I have promised him nobody else has been lined up, that we have not signed another manager for next season.

“This is his job and he has to grab it. It is a big chance for him.

“You don’t do what he did at Everton for ten years and become a bad manager — he is a good manager.

“He did not make this about money. It is about re-establishing himself, taking his chance and keeping West Ham in the Premier League.”
