Anton du Beke found himself rushing to Ruth Langsford’s defence on Saturday night’s Strictly as Craig Revel Horwood set about criticising her for a mistake.

The show saw the pair take to the ballroom for a foxtrot, which began with the pair walking down the studio steps at the start of the routine.

But that little movement failed to impress Craig, who subsequently told the presenter: ‘You messed up coming down the stairs, you came down at a completely different time.’

Cue Anton leaping to defend his celebrity partner, pointing out: ‘That was me actually! I came down at the wrong bit.

‘I came down the short side instead of the long side, and I missed a step out. That was entirely my fault and I apologise.’

The audience were definitely on Anton’s side, cheering him as he admitted his mistake – but it didn’t stop Craig, who accused Ruth of ‘trotting like a horse’ through the performance, causing her to turn to Anton and quip: ‘He didn’t like it.

We can’t imagine what gave her that idea.

Ultimately poor Ruth found herself with just 18 points from the judges – including a measly four from Craig – finding herself propping up the leaderboard as a result.

But can she live to fight another week? Find out when Strictly Come Dancing’s results show airs on BBC One on Sunday night from 7.15pm – as the remaining couples find out which of them will be performing in Blackpool next Saturday night.
