Dame Judi Dench is set to reveal the personal, heartbreaking reasons she plants trees in a new BBC documentary.
Judi Dench: My Passion For Trees sees the 83-year-old actress reveal the reason she turned her back garden in Surrey into her very own woodland – in order to remember the loved ones in her life that have passed away.
In the show, which airs on Wednesday night, Judi warmly tells audiences how every time a loved one in her life dies, she plants a tree in remembrance of them.
Dame Judi explains the story behind some of the trees planted, including her brother Jeff, actress Natasha Richardson and her late husband, actor Michael Williams, who passed away in 2001.
Speaking of her journey, Judi said in a press statement: ‘Planting trees is about remembering, and something that is living, that goes on.
‘So you don’t just remember loved ones and stop, you remember them and the memory goes on, and it gets more wonderful,’ she said of the new show.
Joining her in her story is wildlife enthusiast and her current partner of seven years, David Mills. A host of various scientists, including Tony Kirkham, Head of the Arboretum at Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, also join the pair on their journey.
The experts help Judi to explore the changing seasons and their effect on Surrey, the most-wooded county in Britain, over the course of a year.
Using innovative film techniques, the show promises to also show us the UK’s woodland scenery in its most splendid glory, utilising cutting edge camera work and technology to bring the woodland to life.
The show has also been produced by the multi BAFTA and Emmy award-winning team behind BBC hits such Inside the Commons, David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef, and Galapagos.
Judi Dench: My Passion For Trees airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
