Mission: Impossible — Fallout, the sixth in the Mission: Impossible series, finally has a subtitle, an official synopsis, and a release date (July 27), but no trailer or clips to be seen. Why is that? Because, due to an on-set injury that happened back in August, they’re still filming it.
It was the perfect storm. Tom Cruise, the series’s star, insists on doing is own stunts, and the Mission: Impossible movies insist on besting themselves every time. Ghost Protocol had Ethan Hunt dangling from the mirrored windows of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Rogue Nation opened with Hunt clinging to the side of a jet for dear life as it took off. Fallout has at least one scene with Hunt hanging on to the outside of a helicopter mid-flight. But it wasn’t any of these that did Cruise in. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, he and the rest of the cast—Simon Pegg, Henry Cavill, and Rebecca Ferguson—revealed footage of the stunt that ended with Cruise hobbling off camera with a broken ankle.
The stunt: Cruise, attached to a number of wires, runs across the roof of a building and leaps to the roof of another, missing the edge of the second roof and having to pull himself up. The miss was planned, but his foot hitting the side of the building at a very wrong angle was not. Let’s be clear: this video is not for the squeamish. Pegg still hasn’t watched it. “They keep trying to show it to me,” he said, “and I’m like ‘NOOOO!’”
The craziest part—what Norton says is “the reason Tom Cruise gets paid the big bucks”—is that afterward Cruise pulls himself up from the edge of the roof and keeps running. “I didn’t want to do it again,” Cruise said. “I knew instantly it was broken, and I ran past the camera. Got the shot, it’s in the movie.”
Pegg said that as soon as Cruise ran past the camera, something clearly wrong with his leg but doing his best to complete the stunt, everybody around him said, “Oh, that’s so him.”
