Ruby Rose has revealed that she been cast as Batwoman for an upcoming TV series in which the superhero will be the first openly lesbian hero on screens.

The CW are developing a new Batwoman series to join their current crop of DC Comics shows, with plans for it to debut in 2019 – making DC Comics not only the first franchise to have female-fronted superhero on screen (Wonder Woman) but also the first to have a LGBTQ series.

The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. Im also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream, wrote the Orange Is The New Black star on her Instagram.

This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.

The show will focus on Kate Kane, who made her debut in the comics in 2006.

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing citys criminal resurgence, Variety claims the shows premise will begin.

But dont call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gothams symbol of hope.

Caroline Dries will serve as the writer and executive producer on the project; she also worked on an early DC Comic TV show, Smallville, which told the story of a high school Clark Kent.

The series would join a host of other DC Comics that continue to be successful for the network, including The Flash, Arrow, Legends Of Tomorrow, and Supergirl.
