The moment that Joe Tate was revealed as dead in Emmerdale is one that devastated fans – and it is set to continue to affect those left behind as the saga rumbles on into a dramatic and unsettling winter in the village.

With Cain Dingle absent as he takes some time to clear his head, Moira is more suspicious than ever while Graham Foster continues to hide the fact that he is the one who struck the killer blow. And Debbie, Sarah and Noah remain oblivious to Joes true fate.

From big returns and confessions through to a whopping twist fans are hoping out for, here are things we can still expect to see:

Cain will be back – head uncleared

On the advice of sinister Graham, Cain has had to step away from the village as he struggles to deal with the guilt of supposedly killing a man. Having already been left stunned by an aggressive outburst from Cain, Moira is left mystified by his disappearance.

So when he returns, still brooding, he is going to have some explaining to do. Will Moira get to the truth?

Graham struggles alone in Home Farm

With Joe dead, Graham is left to rattle around the manor house on his own – with only his dark thoughts for company. What a lovely existence. But with his alcohol problems only ever a bottle away, can he cope?

Andrew Scarborough recently told us: Youll see him coping, or not coping, with things. Theres quite a lot for him to do while Kim is in prison. Not to mention coping with aftermath of what happened with Joe and how he deals with it – as we saw theres a lot of tragedy in what transpired and while it was dysfunctional with Joe, they were still family and loved each other like father and son. And also, Graham IS an alcoholic…

Moira will be a rock to Cain

Moira knows what its like to live with a guilty killer secret so when she inevitably finds out what is going on with Cain, Jeff Hordley is certain that she will understand and help him try and move past this.

He told Metro.co.uk: I think if theres one person who could help Cain with this is Moira as she has a little bit of experience with murder!

Will Debbie forgive Cain?

Debbie reckons that Joe simply walked out on her – but in actual fact he was heading back to marry her despite the threat against his life and Graham has a voicemail to prove it. So if Debbie then found out that Cain had been involved in his death, we can expect huge emotion.

Charley Webb told us: I think it could be the downfall for their relationship – itll be big. If she does eventually find out, its going to destroy them a little bit.

Show boss Jane Hudson added fuel to this fire recently when she revealed that upcoming scenes would see two members of the Dingle family potentially estranged from each other permanently. And thats surely got Cain and Debbie written all over it…

Jane said: We have got huge rifts coming up in the Dingle clan that will blow apart two of our most loved characters and who knows if they will ever get back to where they used to be?

Kim returns

She is out of the way for now, serving the remainder of her prison sentence but Kim will be back and badder than ever. She was the one who ordered Joes death, so she is bound to be up to her neck in it when she arrives back in the village.

Jane teased: Although Kims initial return was fleeting, she caused such mischief and chaos that we simply couldnt resist bringing her back. Kim Tate is just getting warmed up for an explosive 2019 which will see her hell-bent on getting exactly what, and who, she wants.

James takes Joes spot

Joe may be gone so theres a vacancy for a dashing, twenty-something, male Tate at Home Farm – and we know that James is all but confirmed to be coming back after Kim ordered Graham to track him down and bring him home.

Hinting at what James might be like, Claire King (Kim) told us: Hes bound to be young, glamorous, gorgeous, theyre going to bring that kind of character in to replace Ned arent they? Hell be a good looking young boy. They havent spoken for a while so thats why shes asked Graham to try and find James.

A final shock twist?

Of course, the plot continues to thicken over whether Joe is actually dead. ned has confirmed it, the show has confirmed it, writers have confirmed it – even Metro.co.uk, the most trustworthy soap source has confirmed it.

And yet, without a body, viewers are just waiting for that Joe return. Could it happen? Some of the cast arent ruling it out.

Charley mused: We actually dont know. Whichever way, Cains not killed him, hes either alive or Grahams killed him.
