House of Cards season six focuses entirely on Robin Wrights Claire Underwood as she levels up to president.

Theres been a complete change in shift in the wake of Frank Underwoods death – with even the colour scheme having a shake-up.

Metro.co.uk caught up with costume designer Jessica Wenger, who revealed all the details the Netflix shows audience may have missed, from the change in colour palette, right down to Claires signature cufflinks. Yep, we bet you missed that one.

Jessica told us: When Claire took over the Oval office, the Oval had a whole new makeover and all of the walls were a greyscale and everything around her started to go very grey.

The idea was that the world around her is getting very controlled and turns very Claire-like. As the season progresses she brings more and more women around her.

I was able to create that world and turn almost every one of those women into a fully grey palette. There are subtle design choices made from the wall colour to the furniture so Claire took control in every scene.

She added: If you dont notice, that means we did our job really well.

Claires season six wardrobe has taken a brand new turn as well and her transition from girly to strong power suits and dark dresses are reiterated in a series of flashbacks.

Talking about the stark differences, Jessica told us: Viewers see a young Claire in a 1970s super flowy dress and then she runs into the boys she doesnt wear anything flowy anymore and very little white.

The white dress had little eyelets and flows and is absolutely what Claire Underwood is not. It was a special thing to see young Claire, very innocent, very girly, very young and free in this white gown to then it being cut off and her childhood stripped away.

Jessica added: And then you cut into teenage Claire and college Claire and you can see her getting more preppy and more buttoned up and more calculative in what shes wearing.

It was fun to design the introspective side of what made this woman.

Every little detail was important and Jessica revealed that Claires outfits were always accessorised with cufflinks – an element that viewers may have glossed over.

Jessica explained: They (producers) really wanted a more militant inspired season for her (Claire Underwood).

Every US President always has their very own personal version of a cufflink, so when Frank was a President we had a very special one for him and the Vice President have one too.

They worked to make sure that every one of Claires outfits had a French cuff and that she wore a Presidential cuff to keep up the tradition of the Office.

House of Cards is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
