MasterChef The Professionals judge Marcus Wareing has hit back at accusations the cooking contest is fixed after coming under fire for booting out Matthew Ryle.

The 24-year-old was a firm favourite to lift the MasterChef trophy tonight, and viewers were genuinely in disbelief to see the young chef sent packing.

By disbelief, we mean they kicked off to the point that head judge Marcus was forced to step in.

Unbelievable matthew went!!! Hope this is a genuin competition and not fixed!! Gutted for him. #MasterChefUK

You complete tools. Why throw in a quick knockout round at that stage? You allow viewers to get invested in a brilliant young chef as he leads the pack over multiple rounds, and then kick him out for one dish? Bad TV, and undermines your title's credibility. Tools. #masterchefuk

WTF?!?!#masterchefprofessionals one "bad" dish out of all those amazing ones and #Matt is kicked out but Dean, who has only been mediocre compared, is still in?! Hope it's a fix so one of them could offer Matt a job! Not happy at all! @BBC

We can only judge the dish put in front of us, we love these guys as much as you do, its not a personality contest its a cooking competition at the highest level…

Matthew broke down in tears as he was told his braised turbot was weak, after pretty much hitting the perfect note with every single dish beforehand.

This is literally the worst time to go out, he said as he left the competition. Im pretty devastated, being so close to the end but Im so proud of myself.

Ive loved it, Ive genuinely loved it. Its been amazing.

In Matthews place, finalists Laurence, Henry Dean banks and Oli Martin will battle it out to become the champion of MasterChef: The Professionals, where, as it stands, its anyones title to take.

MasterChef: The Professionals continues tonight at 8pm on BBC Two.
