From the bar to the backstage press room, theres more than meets the eye at the Golden Globes, Hollywoods frothiest night. Vanity Fairs Nicole Sperling and Julie Miller are on the ground and providing live updates.

4:55 P.M. Patricia Arquette is hungry and nothing will stop her. Arriving to the Golden Globes too late to be served dinner, the Globe-nominated Escape at Dannemora actress opted for the buffet that was set up in the bar. But a cranky server wouldnt remove the plastic wrap so she could eat. She asked to speak to a supervisor, but when that got her nowhere she took took sandwiches anyways and took off. The buffet line opened moments later. It was a good thing Arquette carboo-loaded; within the hour she won the lead actress in a limited series or TV movie for the physically transforming role. —N.S.

5:15 P.M. Confusion filled the air at the show when someone yelled “Im sorry,” seemingly errantly, after Sandra Oh cracked her joke about Asian-American actors in such movies as Aloha and Ghosts in the Shell. Was it Emma Stone? It had to be. I headed into the main floor of the ballroom to find out, and Fox Searchlight chairman Steve Gilula gladly confirmed. “Yup, it was her.” __N.S.

5:25 P.M. Billy Porter lost his first Golden Globe nomination for his role in Ryan Murphys drama, Pose, but that didnt stop him from looking fierce and receiving some adoration for it. He made a beeline after his loss to his sartorial peer Janelle Monae. The two then shared an, “Oh my god, you look amazing” moment. The whole exchange was observed by famed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, who just formed a production company in Los Angeles and seemed to be getting a kick over the entire affair. —N.S.

5:45 P.M. The mood was muted and the syringes were fake. I ran into the main ballroom area to ask Linda Cardellini if the flu shot administered during the ceremony as part of that bit was, well, actually a flu shot. Interrupting her chat with her Green Book co-star Mahershala Ali, she assured that it was fake. Apparently performers werent asked ahead of time, either. At least Willem Dafoes people said he wasnt. —N.S.

5:55 P.M. Ben Whishaw is not counting on a Mary Poppins sequel anytime soon: “I think there should be a very long break until there is another Mary Poppins. Shes got to do what she is doing up there in the clouds before she returns again.” Asked whether gay characters should only be played by gay actors, Whishaw said, “I dont think that should happen because I really believe actors can believe and portray anything. . . I think there was a time where we didnt know much about actors and it was very mysterious. . . on the other hand, I think there has to be greater equality. I would like to see more gay actors play more straight roles. It should be an even playing field for everybody. . . thats where we should be aiming.” —J.M.

6:00 P.M. Americans creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg are not shedding any light on a follow-up series: “Weve been working on various projects. . . taking a lot of long walks thinking about what the new show is that we want to write together. . . . We dont know.” —J.M.

6:10 P.M. Arquette apologized backstage for dropping an f-bomb when accepting her Golden Globe: “Im sorry, I know! You cant take it back, can you? I didnt plan that. . . . This is a very elegant occasion.” But her enthusiasm for her Escape at Dannemora role continued when speaking to the press backstage after her win. “I never thought I would get a part like this in middle age. I am 50 years old. I am a woman without a particular body type in Hollywood,” she said. —J.M.

6:20 P.M. Allison Brie on the Chrissy Metz hot mic moment:

6:30 P.M. Michael Douglas had high praise for wife Catherine Zeta Jones when he came backstage to talk to press following his Globe win for The Kominsky Method: “Catherine, by the way, has a very wonderful new half hour comedy called Queen America that comes out on Facebook. She does some very funny stuff. It was great for her to be here tonight and share in this. . . . I flash back to the time when she was pregnant with our daughter at all the awardS shows during Chicago.” —J.M.
