Watching last nights episode of Les Misérables was like having teeth pulled – literally.

The BBCs ongoing and deadly-serious dramatic adaptation of Victor Hugos novel was anything but a song and dance yesterday (6 January), with one particular scene putting viewers off visiting the dentist for a while.

Poor old Fantine (played by Lilly Collins) had already endured a miserable time on the show by having to give away her daughter Cosette to the Thénardiers, before she was then conned into thinking that she needed to stump up some serious cash in order to provide for Cosettes welfare.

This drove Fantine to some rather extreme measures: namely, agreeing to sell her hair and teeth to Ron Cooks hair and teeth dealer (his actual name on the cast list).

This new production of Les Misérables certainly isnt shy about showing the utterly painful – and very nineteenth century – process of pulling teeth, as Fantine and viewers alike screamed in agony at the grisly scene.

WELL HOORAH …LES MIS IS GOING TO GIVE ME FUCKING NIGHTMARES….SELLING YOUR TEETH….FUCK MOI

EXCUSE ME #LesMiserables – THE MUSICAL IS MUCH SOFTER THAN THAT IN SHOWING THE TORTURE. MY POOR PRECIOUS FANTINE, SHE DESERVED BETTER ?❤

Things didnt much improve for Fantine after that, what with her being forced into prostitution in order to continue paying the Thénardiers while also suffering from a life-threatening disease.

And yes, sadly the downtrodden Frenchwoman looked like she was succumbing to said disease as episode two of Les Misérables drew to a depressing close.

Disturbing and very sad scenes indeed – just what you want for Sunday evening entertainment, and enough to make you cancel this weeks trip to the dentist…

Les Misérables continues next Sunday (13 January) on BBC One at 9pm.
