George Lucas Helped Direct the Game of Thrones Season 8 Premiere

George Lucas has been to Winterfell. On Monday, HBO dropped a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones, giving fans a peek behind the very expensive curtain. And as it turns out, the Star Wars creator himself was behind that curtain—dropping by the shows set just because he wanted to, evidently.

“When we found out George Lucas wanted to visit, we thought maybe it was a practical joke,” says show co-creator David Benioff in the clip. “We were really excited and also nervous because its George Lucas.”

In the clip, Lucas ambles around the wintery set, mingling with the cast and standing alongside episode director David Nutter (a longtime Thrones alum with a heartbreaking backstory). Lucas hops behind the monitor, standing alongside the thrilled Thrones helmer. “It was so cool for me,” Nutter says.

Lucas can also be seen briefly directing Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) when they have a heart-to-heart after arriving in Winterfell together for the first time.

“That was great,” Lucas said, clasping Haringtons arm. And then, he reconsiders. “No direction for you,” he tells the actor. “I dont really care about you. I dont care what happens to you.” Maybe hes joking (hes probably joking)—or maybe Lucas is just not a Jon Snow fan! Its possible! Jon Snow is not everyones cuppa, and Lucas has probably had his fill of young, angsty protagonists. Who knows?

This isnt the first time the worlds of Star Wars and Thrones have collided. Clarke starred in the Star Wars spin-off Solo, while Gwendoline Christie (who plays the noble Brienne of Tarth) starred in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, playing the villainous Captain Phasma. The overlap will continue in the years to come, as Benioff and Thrones co-creator D.B. Weiss have been tasked with creating a new series of Star Wars films—which, according to Disney head Bob Iger, we wont be seeing for a while. For now, we have Lucass jaunt to Winterfell.
