Suranne Jones shocked US viewers last night with a heavy lesbian sex scene for new drama, Gentleman Jack.

The real-life story, which follows the tale of lesbian businesswoman Anne Lister in 1832, saw Suranne jump between the sheets with a married aristocrat, Marianna Lawton (Lydia Leonard).

Anne returns from travelling with a renewed zest for life in the first episode of the series – and Marianna, in a bid for post-coital pillow talk, wants to know more.

However, Anne refuses to talk about Hastings, which hints she could be hiding something.

The dual production between HBO and the BBC has already enticed viewers overseas, who praise its gay representation in a time period that didnt allow it.

Hazzah #GentlemanJack!, one wrote. Another fantastic #HBO series increasing positive representation of #LGBTQI+ stories on #TV. First episode was great, looking forward to the rest.

Nothing delights me more than a tv show starring Suranne Jones and the first episode of #GentlemanJack has positively charmed the wits out of me, added another.

While another summarized the shows plot to their followers and explained by it was so important.

They wrote: Ok, you officially have my attention, #GentlemanJack. Period drama based on real life, unapologetic lesbian & English landlord–so far doesnt shy away from all her complex (and not always flattering) realities & attraction to women isnt a point of pain. Great casting, too.

Anne became known as Gentleman Jack thanks to her love of hobbies and activities that were typically male – owning a large amount of land and shooting a gun like a pro.

The story picks up on Annes life as she tries to renovate Shibden Hall in West Yorkshire.

Leaving behind a diary that has become a classic of LGBT literature, Anne has since been remembered for her own work with a blue plaque in 2018, commemorating her later marriage to Ann Walker.
